MAKERRA Korats
Cattery
Information Letter
Makerra
Cattery was started in 1994 when a long time dream of owning a Korat
became a reality. Although initially, the foundation Queen was to be a
pet, I became interested and devoted to promoting what I consider the
most wonderful of all domestic felines. Since I have full time career
as an IT Specialist, Makerra Korats is a hobby and not a pet shop.
I breed on occasion to produce Korats that will further the breed for
future generations and to show. Since I cannot keep all of them, I
occasionally have kittens which are placed in select homes.
I am a member of the Si Sawat
Society and the CFA Korat Breed Council. I am very involved in all
matters concerning the Korat and abide by all Pledges and Regulations of
those associations. Kittens are placed with a
Sales
Contract and I
strive to find compatible, loving, and happy homes for them.
Korats
are not for everyone. They are very active and highly intelligent. In
their homeland of Thailand, they are treated as royalty and they have
never forgotten this!!!!!
If
you have a vase that has been in your family for years, then you should
be willing to put it away in a safe place, rather than confine the
cat. They are also the most wonderful companion and need interaction
with humans.
Makerra
Cattery is both FeLV and FIV negative. All Korats have been tested for
Gangliosidosis by the Scott Ritchey Research Center at Auburn University
and I have never had an affected kitten. Additionally all of our
adults are periodically tested for all major diseases. Our kittens are
placed between age 3 1/2 - 4 months old. Sorry, but I do not ship
I guarantee the kitten
to be in perfect health when it leaves here. The kitten will have had
its first series of 3-way shots against Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calici
and Panleukopenia at age 8 and 12 weeks old. It will be checked by our
Veterinarian for worms and such, and receive its Rabies vaccination.
The Feline Leukemia vaccination will be up to the future owner as most
Vets do not like to administer this to kittens under 6 months old, but I
strongly recommend against it as current studies question the
effectively of this vaccine. I do give a 60 day health guarantee, which
is to say, should something happen to the kitten that is not your fault,
and something that was beyond our control or having knowledge of, the
kitten will be replaced or your money refunded. This would strictly
refer to a genetic problem which went several generations back, and I
did not know about.
Breeding is a time and money consuming hobby. I spend at least $30 a
week on food and supplements to ensure that our Korats are kept in
optimum health. That figure jumps up to $70 to $80 when I have a
litter. Veterinary care, Stud fees (at least $500) accommodations for
breeders, shows, etc…. are an added expense. Therefore money from
kittens helps offset expenses so that I can continue to produce the high
quality, loving Korats that I am known for.
Our prices are as follows:
Pet quality kittens which are sold already
Neutered/Spayed and with a sales contract for $500.
I do not place kittens in homes as
breeders unless I have been working with that individual for some time.
The kitten is to be paid for in full
before leaving here, unless other specific arrangements are made at the
time of purchase. You will also be asked to sign a sales contract,
agreeing to certain common sense rules as not to let the kitten run
outside, not to resell it without my knowledge, etc.
I do not sell kittens as top show
quality, nor do I guarantee their Grand Championship. The reason is
simple. In showing, you most likely will always encounter other cats
with a better show potential, thus beating yours. All of our cats are of
Champion and Grand Champion bloodlines; I have mainly the KON LEK LEK,
KOTHAI , MOWL SIMA lines and a very special import from Chiangmai
Cattery, Chiangmai Thailand. I currently have 2 breeding females. As a
rule, I have 2 or 3 litters a year.
I have a lovely stud male from Mowl
Sima.
Since KORATS have always been rare
even in their own native country, they are not as plentiful as some of
the other breeds. You may have to go on a waiting list; ours are usually
spoken for before they are born.
When a kitten leaves here, it will
be accompanied by the health record, feeding instructions and its
Pedigree. With Pet quality kittens, I retain the CFA application for
individual registration (CFA Blue Slip) until the owner sends us
veterinarian proof (verification) of neutering or spaying. By the way,
altered cats can be shown in what CFA refers to as the "Premiership
Class", and they can go as high as Grand Premier. They may also
compete for regional and national awards.
Should you have any further
question, please fell free to write or call me, and I'll do my utmost
best to help - that's what I'm here for.
